Jetting sends water down the pipe at up to 4,000 psi through a reversed nozzle that pulls the hose along and scours the pipe wall behind it. It is the right tool for fat and grease, scale, bedded silt and fine root hairs, and it is the only method that leaves the full bore of the pipe clean rather than punching a hole through the middle of a blockage. It is not, however, the right tool for every drain.
Jetting the wrong pipe makes things worse
A cracked clay joint, a deformed pitch fibre pipe or a section already close to collapse can be broken open by a jetting nozzle at full pressure. A competent specialist drops a camera in first, or jets at reduced pressure, where the pipe’s condition is unknown — ask what pressure they will use and whether they will survey first.

What’s involved
Drain Jetting
Age, material and history decide the pressure. Modern plastic and sound clay take full pressure; pitch fibre and cracked clay do not. This is the step cheap operators skip.
A reversed nozzle is fed from the chamber and drawn through the run, cutting the blockage and scouring the pipe wall. Fat, scale, silt and fine roots come away rather than being pushed along.
Most specialists will film the run afterwards on request. That confirms the full bore is clear and shows any damage the blockage had been hiding.
FAQs
Drain Jetting questions
Can drain jetting damage my pipes?
It can, if the pipe is already weak. Full-pressure jetting can open up a cracked clay joint or further deform a pitch fibre pipe. On any drain of unknown age or condition a specialist should either survey first or work at reduced pressure — both are standard practice and neither adds much to the cost.
Is jetting better than rodding?
For anything hard or greasy, yes. Rods punch a hole through a blockage and get the drain running; jetting scours the whole pipe wall, so the drain runs at full bore and takes longer to block again. For a soft blockage close to the house, rods are quicker and cheaper.
